I mounted the Garmiin GSC 10 Speed/Cadence Bike Sensor on my Specialized Epic Comp. Installation of the unit itself was easy, but I did have to add a rubber shim when I mounted the magnet to my crankarm to get it close enough for it to read from to the sensor. After the installation was complete and I sinked it to my Garmin forerunner 305 everything works flawlessly.

I'm a big and long time fan of Garmin fitness equipment. I have 2 Forerunner 305's, an Edge 305 and a 310XT. I love' em all. I love both forms of heartrate straps. I'm very happy with the new version of Garmin Connect that is a great free service. Garmin is also excellent with customer service.

On the other hand this cadence device is the worst piece of Garmin equipment I have ever experienced. I bought two as I can move the Edge 305 between bikes. Set up is not all that difficult. The problem is keeping the things working. The longest I've been able to get one to work is a month and I've had two for going on two years.

Lately even with new batteries I can get the green light that checks to make sure that the magnet on the crank arm is making magenetic contact with the unit to flash when the bike is in the stand but not when I'm actually riding the bike. Keep in mind you use 2032's and those batteries get expensive to switch out every month. I could see if only one was having issues but both are and so I'm thinking design issues are at play.

The only thing I can say positive about this unit is that since it has worked so rarely that I have developed my own sense of cadence so I really don't need it. On the other hand I'm a gearhead (just in case you couldn't tell) and it drives me nuts that I've paid good money for these things and they simply don't work worth a damn.

Save your money and take a pass until Garmin redesigns this unit.

Unfortunately, as Garmin has expanded their quality control has been poor. While I believe this has the potential to be a good product, I purchased two of these units for my bike and my wife's. One of them came with an almost dead battery and a dead speed sensor (although the cadence works well). I am not the only person with this issue as the garmin support forums have had several people complain of this issue. Replacing the unit through G has been difficult as well. Their call center is slow and overwhelmed.

The second unit works perfectly as expected, and provides what is advertised. The unit seamlessly pairs with both my forerunner 310xt and my wife's forerunner 405.

So, while the product itself, if it worked w/o problem I would rate as a 4, the QC issues and issues with Garmin Customer Support make the GSC (which I am otherwise a fan of) a 2 star rating.

As a new runner, I was looking for a way to get myself motivated to run, so I read some reviews and decided to go with the Forerunner 405. After spending 10 minutes flipping through the user guide, I was ready to start using my new GPS watch. It has a pretty low learning curve. If you don't read instruction manuals (like me), it took me a minute to figure out how to navigate to the training mode and back to the main menu, but other than that, no real problems.

As far as negatives, I will say I tried out the GPS mode and that left a lot to be desired. For that kind of money, it would be nice to have some kind of graphical map instead of arrows pointing you on a digital compass. The reason I say this is when I got lost in the park at the end of my 6 mile run, I hit the GPS feature to find my way back to my nearby car where I had originally started my workout, but the GPS told me to backtrack 6 miles along the route I had originally come, rather than adapting to find my nearby starting point. I ended up finding my car about a 1/4 mile away, and as I was getting closer to my car, the GPS finally made the connection and adjusted, saying I was 0.1 miles away from my initial starting point.

Overall, a pretty solid product. The syncing ability is nice, I only wish Garmin Connect were more user and communication friendly. It would be great to have message boards where you could find other runners of your ability in the area and try to "compete" against each others' times or contact people and be able to meet up for group runs. It would also be nice to comment on peoples' routes, leaving words of encouragement or helpful tips.

GPS: Obviously it can't do what a handheld unit can, but it holds it own for all the GPS functionality. The X10 can take a minute or two to lock on to a signal when you first activate the GPS, but once it has a lock, I've never lost signal on all hikes/bikes (outside, obviously concrete buildings are a dead zone). The on-screen activity data gives all the essentials: current/average speeds, min/max speed, time/distance traveled, and elevation traveled as well as min/max elevation. Adding the compass and "nav" feature means you can at least point yourself in the right direction to get back to where your activity started - very handy when exploring new trails. I have not used the routes feature, but I imagine it could be very useful for more critical uses like mountaineering.

GPS software: not the most elegant, but it does the trick. Easy to export a text file which can be converted to kml and used with google earth or a host of other online applications for viewing on a nice map. Two big issues here: 1) PC-only, no Mac. 2) no basemap in the software - as in, you just see a red line of your track, there is no map underneath it. You can import map images from google earth, or wherever, but you have to calibrate them. Not worth it, just export and use elsewhere.

ABC (altimeter/barometer/compass): excellent, Suunto really has this part down.

Temperature: yes, it reads temp, but unless you wear the watch on a string around your neck, the reading is going to be about 5 degrees less than your body temp. You can take the watch off, but the sensor is slow and you'll have to wait about 10 minutes to get an accurate reading of ambient temp.

Battery life: fantastic! After the first full-charge, I was able to use the watch for almost a month before I actually drained it. This included at least 5 trips longer than 1-hour recorded at the highest GPS setting (1 second intervals), and only plugged in via USB to download the trips for a few minutes at a time.

Screen visibility: another less than great rating here. The backlight is fine, but you need a fair bit of light to read the numbers easily, it's a low contrast screen. I'd recommend against the military version here, if I had to redo, I'd go for the standard.

Durability/wearability: Very tough. My X10 has taken a few good whacks on mountain bike rides, no problems but a small scuff. It's a big watch, yes, but actually quite light, so if you can deal with the visual size, it's not an issue. Strap is comfy with good adjustability (although probably won't get small enough for very small wrists, ladies).

Overall, 4 out of 5. A product with excellent core functionality that could be top-notch with some peripheral improvements.

Military model may be difficult to read. - AGadgeteer - NE Ohio
I bought the X10 military model. The display is very dark and nearly always difficult to read (if you get it just right in the light, it can be read clearly). I am not sure if this is by design (for stealth), or is a problem with this model, or if it is a problem is with this particular watch. We have changed the settings to optimize the display without reasonable improvement. It never looks like the picture shown. It is dark and uneven (parts of the screen are more difficult to read than others).

In any event, it is being exchanged for the "regular" model.

I own a Suunto X6HR and have loved the watch. Suunto makes great products. I am sure the "regular" X10 will be "the ticket."

My wife loves it! she has used it so much for her runs that the battery went out in 6 months! We went to a watch store to change it. It had no power unless we adjusted it, then it would lose power again...uggg. My wife loved it so much we just got a new one. I hope the battery last longer, if not, looks like she'll have another one for her birthday (easy gift). The set up is a bit of a pain, but if you call Garmin, they can help and it's only a one time deal. Other than the set up & battery, it's great. Tracks speed, distance thru-out the run (i.e. when you slow down it shows you on the computer via graph and text when and how long during the run you slowed down and what speed you going). Pretty cool. Just make sure you get the foot pod also.

Hate it. (hate a pretty strong word for this review). I'd like it if it worked. It works only some times. Most the time it resets itself, or doesn't pick up the heart rate or cadence pod for the bike. just getting it started is a long combination of button pushing memory madness. It is not a simple heart rate monitor. Buy a better modle. This one is bad. I've even sent it back to have it repaired and it came back noted as, "in working condition". Since the "repair" it's even worse. i'm not even going to try and resale it. I'd feel that I'm selling something broken.

I got this watch about 9 months ago, and was fairly happy with it until it stopped working. It went through the first battery in about 5 months and after having it changed it never seemed the same. I tripped during a race this Fall and while I didn't hit it on the pavement, it reset from the shock. Poof, mile 4 of a half marathon and my watch reads 00:00. Since then it's repeatedly reset at the slightest bump or jostle and now the battery's dead again. Now I have no watch and am not sure I want to give Garmin any more of my money.

Great Price "Garmin Forerunner 405 Wireless GPS-Enabled Sports Watch" Today

I bought the Forerunner in late February 2010 and installed the current software and firmware. For the last 6 months I used the 205. There are a lot of reviews written for the Forerunner 405 already, so first a few things I noticed that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere, and if you already have a 205 or 305 you might be interested to know:

(1) The 405 no longer has the "other" sport mode. Now it's just running and biking modes. There's no fast way to switch between sports like there was on the older models. Switching sports requires navigating through a few levels of menu.

(2) The 205 (and 305) had two display screen pages, and a third page dedicated to the sport mode for each of the running, biking, and "other" sport, and that screen would only be accessible if the watch was in that mode. This was useful for example if you wanted to see speed units in bike mode and pace units in running mode. Now, there are three non sport-specific pages, each of which is available in any sport mode, or disabled. That way, you can have a page with speed units and another page with pace units, but both pages are always there for both modes unless you turn one of them off. This makes things a little less convenient.

(3) The 405 cannot be operated while connected to the charger. Battery power only. Probably not an issue for most people but I suppose someone might want to have the option to have the watch run on external power in a lab setting or maybe a long bike ride using solar power or something. Not with the 405.

(4) There is no user setting to control how the device distributes waypoints, and the way 405 does it is mysterious.

(5) upper and lower pace/speed limits are not available on the fly. This functionality is now only available with pre-programmed (advanced) workouts.

(6) The ANT+ interface is a little bit slower and less user-controllable. Transfers happen automatically and in a background process on your computer called the ANT+ agent. (new) data is downloaded from the watch on to the agent and held there, from where it can be accessed by a third party like Garmin Training Center, Sport tracks, etc. If for some reason the transfer fails (like you walk out of the room while it's happening), you have the option to force a re-send via a menu on the watch. If you want to send data to the watch such as workouts, courses etc, whatever software you use sends it to the ANT+ agent, where its held in a queue until the next time the watch is nearby to receive it. This stuff simpler in theory but it requires more things to work correctly and you have very little control over what's happening except to plug or unplug the ANT+ dongle.


I did a 17 mile run yesterday with both the 205 and the 405 on my wrists. The 405 initially locked on to the GPS satellites significantly faster but once the connection is established the reception doesn't seem that much different. The route I ran included several tunnels that go under the street. When going through these tunnels, the 205 tends to lose signal and register crazy instantaneous paces like 3/mile. This can be annoying if you have it set to keep you in a certain pace zone, and it starts beeping at you to slow down. The 405 also lost signal just about as often, but in different tunnels! But overall, the 405 is more reasonable about it and doesn't give weird readings when it loses signal. Both watches gave the same distance within 0.1 mile, so no complaint there.

I don't see the problem with the bezel that a lot of people complain about. It works fine. Sliding your finger on the bezel is only used for scrolling through menus, so unless you're programming your watch while running it's not an issue. Otherwise, you tap on the bezel to switch display pages or turn on the backlight, or tap and hold to change modes. Even in the highest sensitivity setting, you'd really have to put your finger on the bezel and hold it there deliberately to enter a menu and do anything drastic. Starting and stopping the timer is done with the side buttons. I don't even see a need to lock the bezel.

I find the Garmin products to be as good as Polar for HRM plus
the GPS is a lot of fun. It is too bad that Garmin's software
isn't quite as good as Polar (though it is getting better and
has the benefit of running on Mac OSX).

I wasn't sure how well this would work since I live in NYC and didn't think the satellite reception would be great. But so far I love this watch. Only once did it mispace me for the first mile of a run. It has been pretty accurate with mileage, I've found it easy to use and has helped my training.

My other running watch is the polar 625x. I have the foot pod for mileage/pacing. It is not nearly as accurate as this, and any time I use a new running shoe, I have to recalibrate. So this is now my main training watch.

This product can't keep track of calories burned inside with GPS off. Nowhere does it say that in the description. If that is what you are looking for as I was, then you will need to get the 405CX, which of course costs more money.

It was a little complicated to get it working on our Mac, but the over all experience is pretty good. My wife is pretty skinny but this watch is not that big.
